President’s Message

RE: Agreement reached to review Joint Job Evaluation Plan

On November 1, 2017 I wrote a message highlighting CUPE’s concerns about the education factor of he Joint Job Evaluation Plan and shared that we were working on this issue at the bargaining table. It was the focus of the talks at the bargaining table at the Oct. 30 – November 3 session as we reported in the last bargaining update (Nov. 7).

On November 23, 2017 the Health Provider Unions – CUPE, SEIU- West and SGEU reached agreement with SAHO (Saskatchewan Association of Health Organizations) on a Joint Job Evaluation Plan review. A Letter of Understanding was signed on the issue to provide a process for a review of the Joint Job Evaluation Plan.

A little message from you CUPE health care bargaining committee. Bargaining resumed today and will continue until the 27th. Remember to wear your shirts, buttons, stickers, any of your CUPE swag and send us pictures. We find it really encouraging! 

Referendum vote to be held on new bylaws November 29

Members of the newly formed CUPE Local 5430 will have the opportunity to approve their founding bylaws and policies in workplace referendum votes to be held November 29, 2017.

The draft bylaws and policies were adopted at the founding meeting of the new provincial union held September 13 and October 12-13 in Regina, but require further approval from the membership in a referendum vote.

RE: Important Update - Joint Job Evaluation

In the late 1990s, CUPE, SEIU, SGEU and SAHO, through a joint job evaluation project, agreed to develop and implement a sustainable plan using the principles of Equal Pay for Work of Equal Value and Pay Equity.

Health Care Providers Week: October 22nd-29th, 2017

Each health care provider is an important part of the health care team - including continuing care aides, licensed practical nurses, dietary staff, medical diagnostic technologists and technicians, housekeeping and laundry aides, clerical and maintenance staff.

CUPE health care locals strongly approve merger into one provincial union

It’s now official. Saskatchewan’s five CUPE health care locals will be merging into one CUPE provincial health union of over 13,600 members.

The final two merger votes were held August 14. Members of Local 4980 (Sunrise Health Region) voted with a 91 percent majority to merge with other CUPE health care locals in the province, while members of Local 3967 (Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region) backed the merger with 69 percent voting in favour.

Members of the three other CUPE health care locals representing health services providers also endorsed the merger earlier this summer.

Celebrating National Aboriginal Day, June 21

National Aboriginal Day is time to celebrate the vibrant and unique cultures of Indigenous peoples, as First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities graciously share their ceremonies, customs and heritage with us all.

It is also a time for us to recommit ourselves to promoting truth and reconciliation. Canadians must fully and openly recognize the historical and ongoing harm Canada has inflicted through its failed policies and laws to assimilate Indigenous peoples. We must respect the rights of Indigenous peoples to their traditional and unceded territories, and we must acknowledge their histories on these lands – histories that date back far beyond 150 years.

First ever health care council telephone town hall huge success

Over 1,000 health care providers participated in the CUPE Saskatchewan Health Care Council’s first ever telephone town hall.

This innovative technology allowed for the council to invite every member with a working phone number to a one hour meeting about bargaining. Participants heard updates from president, Sandra Seitz, and CUPE health care coordinator, Patty Brockman.
