President’s Message

It is with great pleasure that I introduce myself to you as president of CUPE Local 5430 and begin my term of office. It has been an amazing journey to have served on both the regional and provincial executive boards. I am honoured and humbled to join the long line of union activists and assume the role of president for our local. Since joining CUPE in 2006, I have actively participated in all levels of the organization, including serving on various committees. I am very lucky to have worked alongside some of the finest CUPE members, allowing me to gain a clear understanding of the direction that our union is taking and the implications for our members. I am a nuclear medicine technologist at the Pasqua Hospital in Regina.

 CUPE SAHO Negotiations

We last reported on these discussions in July. Here is a link for your reference.

We want to update you on these two items and provide some information on next steps.

  1. A settlement has been reached for the unfair labour practice (ULP) that was filed against the Saskatchewan Association of Health Organizations Inc. (SAHO). The terms of the settlement include a monetary settlement. Each CUPE member employed on November 30, 2021 will receive a lump sum payment.
  2. A tentative agreement on a one-year extension of the current SAHO/CUPE collective agreement (April 1, 2017 to March 31, 2022) was reached.

First, we will have multiple information meetings to provide the details of the tentative agreement and ULP settlement. Join us on the Zoom platform for an information meeting to learn more and get your questions answered.

Information meetings will be held on December 17 and 20, 2021 and January 3 and 5, 2022. On each of these days, there will be three different presentations at 8:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m., and 6:30 p.m. Each session will be the same, so choose the session that works best for you.

As always, we will give you all the information at the meetings, so everyone gets the same information and sees the same documents at the same time as much as possible.

To request a Zoom invitation to join one of the above meetings, please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and indicate the date and time that you wish to attend.

Currently, we are not planning to do in-person meetings in the facilities or communities due to COVID-19.

The next step is to bring the tentative agreement to you, the members, for approval. We call this a ratification vote.

In the past, ratification votes were done with polls set up in the facilities for a certain length of time on a certain day. This wasn’t perfect, and we would have complaints that there weren’t advance polls or that members couldn’t get to the facility on the assigned day.

We now have experience with using an electronic voting system and will be using that to conduct the ratification vote. This will allow for a larger window of time for voting to happen and can be done from home or another place where email access is available.

This will happen between 6:00 a.m. on January 7 and 6:00 a.m. on January 11, 2022.

You will need to sign up for electronic voting if you have not already done so. If you signed up to vote in the elections for CUPE officers, you will not need to sign up again. You can register on the CUPE 5430 webpage here and click on the black band at the top of the web page or the black Voter Registration box at the top right.

Important information: If you have changed your email address since registering, you will need to re-register to update your email address. We are encouraging all members who have not registered to do so as soon as possible. This one-time registration will allow you to vote in ratification votes and election of officer votes as well. If you are having trouble registering, please contact Nancy Black at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

We like hearing from you. If you have questions or concerns or just want to let us know how you are doing, please reach out.
