REGINA: Following a decision from the Court of King’s Bench last week, CUPE 5430 welcomes the ruling which will maintain CUPE membership for the 600 former Extendicare employees now working for the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) in Regina.
The ruling rejected the application for a stay pending judicial review of the Saskatchewan Labour Relations Board decision that made these employees CUPE members as of November 30, 2023. The court considered a number of factors in its decision, but determined the harm and health costs to the SHA would suffer by ordering a stay of proceedings would outweigh the perceived harm to a few employees from not granting the stay. The dates for the judicial review through the Court of King’s Bench have yet to be determined but are expected in November or December 2024 at the earliest.
As part of the decision, Justice Rothery recognized that “CUPE is a large, sophisticated and formidable union in the health sector in Saskatchewan. It already represents 6,300 union members in the Regina health region, and the 600 members that are brought in pursuant to the Board’s Decision will benefit from this experienced representation.”
Long-term care staff members work incredibly hard to care for the people who built this province, and CUPE 5430 looks forward to going to bat for these members on the issues that matter to them most.
