Electronic Voting

Dear Member of CUPE Local 5430:

As you know, we are living in very unusual times. We’ve been forced to change many of our processes in order to keep our members safe and to continue to conduct our business and to keep our members connected.

Our election process has been changed as well. In the past we held elections in our facilities but this time around, that process is next to impossible. As such, the local has determined that elections will be conducted electronically. We realize our bylaws do not allow for electronic elections; however, we have consulted extensively with the National President’s Office and have received not only approval but also kudos for accessing this process.

Simply Voting is the platform we have selected. It is a tested, proven and reputable service used by high profile organizations such as the University of Prince Edward Island, Elections Prince Edward Island, The Municipality of Huron East, ON, The Municipality of Central Huron, ON, CUPE Air Transat Component, and CUPE Local 3908 among a vast host of others.

The CUPE 5430 Executive is confident that Simply Voting will conduct a flawless election and their expertise and experience will be invaluable in guiding us through any hiccups we may encounter.

In order to conduct this election, we will need all our members to register to vote prior to the election. A registration form has been created and can be accessed on the Local 5430 website. Click here to be diverted to the registration page.

The elections committee will be checking all registrants off the seniority list, as they do at every election, to ensure only CUPE Local 5430 members are granted voting credentials. We ask that you use the same name as on your paystub to make the process easier.

Your voting credentials can be delivered in two ways: in the mail or via email. Personal email addresses are required for email delivery as we do not want the employer to have access to our elections. You can create an email address just for the purposes of this election if you do not normally have a personal email account or you can request that your voting credential be mailed to your residence. In order to allow sufficient time to receive ballots in the mail, members who require them mailed to their homes must register as early as possible.

Voting credentials are very important. They are, in essence, your ballot. Do not share them with others! Each voting credential is a unique identifier which will allow the registered voter to vote once.

Voting will be open for two entire days; that means two 24-hour periods. This means everyone will have ample opportunity to cast their ballot. Any members who missed registering prior to the voting commencing will be able to register until the polls close.

Voting must be done online on a computer or smartphone. We recognize that we have members who either do not have internet at home or don’t have sufficient access to the internet. You do not need to be on your own computer or phone to vote. You can use someone else’s phone, you can go to your local library and use a computer there or any other means by which you access the internet. Please contact your local office or returning officer if you wish to vote but have no means by which to access the internet.

The Elections tab on CUPE Local 5430’s website and Facebook page will always be kept up to date with any information voters will need so please refer to them as you need.

CUPE Local 5430 will make every effort to reach out to all our members by any means at our disposal to notify them of this new election process but we ask that you have conversations with your coworkers and ask them if they are aware and encourage them to register to vote.

While we, the Executive of CUPE Local 5430, recognize that this is a change to our electoral process, we also believe that it will be more accessible to our membership and we look forward to more robust participation.

We hope you embrace this necessary change and we look forward to working with you as we navigate this new chapter on our journey!

In solidarity,

Your 5430 Executive Board
