REGINA: Eden Care Communities announced its decision to close Regina Lutheran Home on Monday, September 25, 2023. The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) has said they will not take over the facility, leaving 62 residents and over 100 staff reeling. Now the union representing staff at the facility is calling for the SHA to take over the facility. 

“The closure of Regina Lutheran Home is yet another example of how this government is failing seniors. Their lack of planning on this file is absurd,” said Bashir Jalloh, president of CUPE 5430. There is a low vacancy rate for long term care spaces in Regina. This closure will cause ripple effects throughout the Regina area. Wait lists that are already too long will grow longer, not to mention that over 100 staff will be impacted.” 

Darlene Gilewich, first Regional Vice-President of CUPE 5430 Region 3 has worked at the Regina Lutheran Home for almost 40 years. 

Inspired by the story of residential school survivor Phyllis Jack Webstad, people across Canada have commemorated September 30 as Orange Shirt Day for nearly a decade.

As a young girl, Phyllis was given a new orange shirt by her grandmother before being taken to a B.C. residential school. The shirt was confiscated and destroyed by her teacher on the first day of class. The destruction of Phyllis’s shirt has come to symbolize the colonial goal of residential schools to assimilate Indigenous peoples.

CUPE 5430 is hosting an informal virtual meeting for its members as an opportunity to connect.

Over the last three days your bargaining committee has been bargaining with the employer.

This set of bargaining dates focused on exchanging proposals and having discussions about each party’s priorities. We are in the initial stages and have not discussed monetary items yet, such as wages.

The employer’s proposal package is very large and complex. We have numerous concerns and are still in the process of analysing their proposals.

As summer quickly turns to fall, your bargaining team is looking forward to beginning the bargaining process on your behalf. Our first set of dates with the employer is scheduled for September 19, 20, and 21.

Over the summer, your executive participated in facility outreach in each region to hear directly from members. We know you are feeling worn down and desperately in need of a fair wage increase.

Are you a CUPE 5430 member working in a rural healthcare facility?

The Saskatchewan Population Health and Evaluation Research Unit (SPHERU) at the University of Regina is undertaking an independent research study that CUPE Local 5430 is funding to better understand the changes in rural health care in Saskatchewan over the past five years.

SPHERU would like to interview CUPE 5430 members about their experience working in rural healthcare settings across the province. These interviews will be used as an important part of the final research report.
