Over 800 CUPE members from every region participated in our recent member survey.
COVID-19 has taken a toll on our members. More than four in ten respondents said they are doing worse than two years ago. When it comes to work, close to half are struggling a little and finding it hard to cope some days, and almost one in three are having a great deal of difficulty.
CUPE Local 5430 has five (5) scholarships of $500.00 each that are awarded every year.
These scholarships are for CUPE members or a dependent (as determined by Revenue Canada) of a CUPE member.
The criteria for the scholarship are the applicant shall be enrolled in an accredited school. University of which tuition is charged, and the applicant is to submit a 500-word essay/brief to the Local on the topic of “Why is privatization bad for Saskatchewan and its peoples?”.

Vicki Tramer is a dental assistant working in Regina. She worked for years in the private sector, before taking a job with the health region’s Advanced Dental Health Practices Program. “Before the pandemic we went out to daycares and community organizations, preschools, in the city and in rural areas, and gave people support and education,” she said. “We have a very unique and specialized service that we provide to the public. Our programming targets young children and school age children to give them and their parents guidance on how to have good oral health habits. I always find it satisfying to bridge the gap, because there are so many people who don’t have the means or the know-how to get to where they need to be with their oral hygiene. I find value in that.”

Chronic understaffing and increasing workload are two of the most pressing issues in health care. The COVID-19 pandemic has made the situation even worse for our members.
We want to make sure the politicians making decisions about health care funding and staffing levels know how these issues are impacting our members. This town hall meeting will feature an update from the workload committee and give you an opportunity to share your stories and hear from other members.
In order to magnify your voices, we have invited representatives from the Government of Saskatchewan and the Official Opposition.

Chelsea Schlecter is an entrance attendant at a nursing home, and her role is one that was created by the pandemic, when the home was under lock down and visitors were only allowed in if a resident was on compassionate care. She said the uncertainty of the pandemic has made her job uncertain, too. “I started in October of last year and the job was posted until February 2022, but who knows? At this point it’s so hard to tell what’s going to come next.”
She said that now visitors are allowed to move more freely and the job has expanded. “At first when we opened back up it was only two visitors per resident and they had to be on a list unless someone was dying. In June or July, we started letting all visitors in, but we have to screen them. About a month ago it changed where masks weren’t mandatory for visitors anymore, but numbers got so bad again that it changed to where you have to wear a mask in common areas, but once you’re in a room, you don’t have to wear one.”
